Local Sightseeing in Delhi: A First-Timer's Route
29 June 2026
Delhi has enough history packed into it that trying to see everything in one visit is a losing battle. If you've only got half a day, here's a route that hits the highlights without doubling back across the city.
Start at the Red Fort in the morning, before the crowds and the heat build up. Give yourself an hour or so to walk the grounds, then head next door to Chandni Chowk — even just wandering the lanes and grabbing something to eat is worth the stop.
From there, Humayun's Tomb is a reasonable next stop — it's often called a precursor to the Taj Mahal's design, and it's usually far less crowded, so you can actually take your time.
Finish at India Gate in the late afternoon or evening, when the light is better for photos and the lawns around it fill up with people out for a walk. It's a fitting last stop — central, easy, and a good place to just sit for a while before heading back.
Doing this route by cab rather than public transport saves a surprising amount of time — no working out routes between stops, no waiting around, and your driver can wait while you look around each site instead of you having to find parking or another ride each time.
